Pelagic Sargassum community change over a 40-year period: temporal and spatial variability

Pelagic forms of the brown algae (Phaeophyceae) Sargassum spp. and their conspicuous rafts are defining characteristics of the Sargasso Sea in the western North Atlantic. Given rising temperatures and acidity in the surface ocean, we hypothesized that macrofauna associated with Sargassum in the Sargasso Sea have changed with respect to species composition, diversity, evenness, and sessile epibi...

Modelling Seasonal Distribution of Pelagic Marine Fishes

The distribution of pelagic marine fishes and invertebrates varies seasonally. However, information on the seasonal variation of the distribution of most pelagic marine fishes and invertebrates is scarce. In this paper, seasonal changes in distribution ranges of commercially exploited pelagic fishes and invertebrates are predicted based on the existing Sea Around Us Project distribution, a pred...

Non-Gaussian distribution in random advection dynamics.

Simulations of vortex tube dynamics reveal that the non-Gaussian nature of turbulent fluctuation originates in the effect of random advection. A similar non-Gaussian distribution is found numerically in a simplified statistical model of random advection. An analytical solution is obtained in the mean-field case.

Advection Influences on Evapotranspiration of Alfalfa in a Semiarid Climate

Advective enhancement of crop evapotranspiration (ET) occurs when drier, hotter air is transported into the crop by wind, and can be an important factor in the water balance of irrigated crops in a semiarid climate. Thirteen days of moderate to extremely high ET rates of irrigated alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) were evaluated using energy balance and atmospheric coupling models to examine the mag...

A synthesis of bentho-pelagic coupling on the Antarctic shelf: Food banks, ecosystem inertia and global climate change

The Antarctic continental shelf is large, deep (500–1000m), and characterized by extreme seasonality in sea-ice cover and primary production. Intense seasonality and short pelagic foodwebs on the Antarctic shelf may favor strong benthopelagic coupling, whereas unusual water depth combined with complex topography and circulation could cause such coupling to be weak. Here, we address six question...
